Mrs. Lachey shares the songs that made young girls dance in their underwear in 1987. We define the term “DC” a.k.a. “dirty cock” and ponder whether Bono qualifies. Mrs. Lachey tells about when she was 16 years-old and dating an 18-year-old who cheated on her with a girl named carmen.

Things have been fairly nutty in my worklife, hence the hugely long interval between now and my last podcast. It was sure nice to get a fine show handed to me on a silver platter by Mr. Smart earlier in the week, and now that I’ve delivered the project that had been monopolizing me I’m celebrating by doing this new show here.
The lead track is an outtake from Morrissey’s first solo album, featuring 60s brit popper Sandie Shaw on backing vocals. Very Phil Spector! And then we round things out with the cocaine snowstorm that is My Drug . In-between? Good stuff. See for yourself…

if youve heard judy miller’s voice, you know all about her: an adult woman who speaks in shirley temple-cutsey-pootsey li’l girl voice to get her way with men in power. only some men in power are smart enough to use her & let her think she’s getting her way, while shes actually doing their dirty work for them.
she really plays up that role of “intrepid girl reporter”, even though shes much too post-menopausal to get away with the ingenue bit.

Today’s word, Potemkin, is an entertaining political term. I have seen it on Boingboing.net many times. Recently it appeared in a post about the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin was an 18th century Russian military officer and politician. Who was rumored to have built fake villages along the banks of the Dnieper river in order to impress Empress Catherine II. Potemkin, who had recently conquered the area, wanted to impress Catherine II by demonstrating the value of the area he had captured by showing off a wonderful village. Today the term potemkin village or just potemkin is used to describe a staged, deceptive or hollow event. Particularly hollow or deceptive political maneuverings. That brings us to the governator. According to SFGate.com this past May the governor went out to San Jose and filled in a pot hole to demonstrate to the citizens of California the state’s increased spending on transportation projects. As you probably guessed the pot hole was dug by a city crew only a few hours earlier. While it may not be a lie is sure is dirty. Another BoingBoing post using potemkin directs our attention to stickers you can put on your SUV to make them look like you have been off-roading. In Potemkin’s defense modern scholars doubt he had a village built. It is more likely he had the villages spruced up a bit and may have passed off a few unfinished projects as finished.
Bedtime For Toys – Killing Rattlesnakes Bedtime For Toys – Killing Rattlesnakes (The Palace Lido Mix) Bedtime For Toys – Killing Rattlesnakes (Dunproofin’s Grass Snake Shake Mix) Bedtime For Toys – Killing Rattlesnakes (Empire State Human Mix) A few months ago SVC ’s own Mr.Rowche was asked to do a site for three young upstarts called Bedtime For Toys (and a very good job he did I think you’ll agree), now this was the first I’d heard of them, but I instantly fell in love with their retro-ish racket. And one of my favourite tracks was Killing Rattlesnakes, so you can imagine how happy I was when a bunch of the seperate tracks came winging it my way to do a remix of… Add a couple of my favourite remixy types and we have ourselves an e.p. that I’m really quite proud to be a part of. I won’t go into too much detail about the remixes, apart from to say that The Palace Lido has come up with a twitchy little number, Dunproofin’ has obviously got good speakers as his mix has some ridiculous low end sub-bass going on, and mines a filthy dirty little number… as most of my mixes are. Anyway, here’s some info… Bedtime For Toys are a three piece consisting of Marchelle Bradanini on vocal and lyrical duties, Samuel Jacob Chatez playing the guitar and bass and Toussaint Christophe hammering the Korg keys and creating the beats. They had two releases on their own Cogito Records before being snaffled up by the UK’s Trash Aesthetics label (famously Bloc Party’s label before being head hunted by V2) who released their self titled UK debut e.p. There’s more info and a whole bunch of tracks can be found on their website Front Cover Back Cover Now here’s an exciting little twist… Those lovely people Bedtime For Toys have asked me to offer up the vocal, bass and guitar tracks from Killing Rattlesnakes so you can make your own re-mix or mash-up, what you want to do with it is entirely up to you… maybe mash it with ??? or completely re-invent the track in your own style… the choice is yours. If you email me your re-mixes and mash-ups with a little info (a bit about yourself would be nice but not essential if you don’t fancy it, and a linky if you have one) to me here, then I’ll upload them and add it to this post…. Killing Rattlesnakes Vocal Track Killing Rattlesnakes Bass Track Killing Rattlesnakes Guitar Track And yes there’s even more…. Then in a few weeks you can vote for your favourite mix/mash-up and the winner will recieve a Bedtime For Toys goodie bag and a $100 gift voucher to buy some musical clobber with, and on top of that there’s possibly going to be a vinyl release featuring some of the bands favourite versions and some originals. So there you go, get cracking… Over the next couple of weeks when a new mix arrives in my inbox I’ll bump this post so as to give the new track a fair crack at being heard. Edit The Vote will be held here on Monday 29th of August(running for a week), so if you can get your Mash-Ups and Re-Mixes to me by the 28th that would be smart, that gives you pretty much 4 weeks to have a bash at it which should be long enough I reckon, and if you’re like me and only spent about 3 hours on it then bung it my way now, there’s no point waiting. Visit – Bedtime For Toys Visit – Dunproofin’ Visit – Empire State Human Simon x

Traveling through Greece, in rural areas and in the outskirts of cities and small towns, one sees the gypsy camps. Derelict trucks, faded canvas tents, and groups of children playing, half-dressed and barefoot. They’re Roma, they’re nomads and we try to keep them invisible: an ordinance requires that authorities block them from settling “near archaeological sites, beaches, landscapes of natural beauty, visible by main highway points or areas which could affect the public health (springs supplying drinking water, etc.)” A lot of our Tsigani, as they’re called in Greece, are migrant workers, they pick our potatoes, our olives, our wheat. We feed them and give them a small salary for the days the harvest lasts. Others roam the city neighbourhoods and the islands, selling plastic chairs, baskets, flashlights, rugs. They’re easily recognisable, the women in long, full skirts of many colours and fabrics, their hair hidden under scarves, arms covered with thin, gold bracelets. They’re exotic, beautiful to watch and they make you smile, as long as it’s a romantic idea of gypsies that you have in your head. The word “gypsy” is a very common put down in Greek culture and language – it means “dirty”, “dishonest”, “immoral”, people you don’t want to associate with – and the Roma, the largest minority in Greece, are treated as third class citizens. They live in shantytowns, segregated and subjected to ill treatment and abuse, have no access to public facilities such as running water and electricity and their children are less likely to attend school. The Roma in neighbouring Turkey don’t have it much better either. Here’s Naish Balamo, sung by Eleni Vitali, a Greek Romani. The first two verses are in Greek and they say “I have no home, I have no hope, no country is going to miss me”. The rest of the song is in Romany and Greek mixed together. Previous posts on Roma: Living in the Gadjikano World, Gypsies.

When we first started CoasterRadio.com, we had no idea that people from all around the world would listen.

We’ve been making friends with people in the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Austria and other countries throughout Europe.

So, even though we don’t know a lot about Europe, we’re going to do our best to devote this week’s show to European Theme Parks.

To help us out, Robb from Theme Park Review.com will be joining us. Robb, along with his wife Elissa and a bunch of their friends just got back from a three week tour of European Parks. They visited 25 parks in 8 different countries.

Robb will tell us about some of the unique attractions that are featured in European parks and how they compare to ones in the US. He’ll also talk about how the atmosphere of their parks helps to make sure everyone has a good time.

We’ll also give another clue in our on-going SOUNDWAVE contest. We’re in week three and no one has correctly guessed the roller coaster yet. We’ll also have a chance for one of our listeners to win a Tomb Raider: Firefall Prize Pack in our Theme Park Trivia segment.

Speaking of Paramount’s Kings Dominion, we’ll be there next Saturday, July 30th for a special taping of CoasterRadio.com. We’ll be there to celebrate their 30th anniversary, check out their new attractions and try to get the dirt on what new attraction they’ll be building in 2006.

Thanks for listening! We’ll see you in the CoasterRadio.com Forum!

[As for Riis’ picture shown here, that will be explained further down, but don’t take this to mean there is some compelling writing in this piece – the connection with the photo is extremely weak, and I only used it because I have no other photo to use] We promised to give you a behind the scenes look at the Tour through our media center, so here is a report about what goes on a few steps further removed from the action if a company is involved in supplying equipment to a Tour team. While Phil travels with the team for the entire Tour (and the week proceeding it), I have been at the office dealing with the media. Every year there seems to be more and more interest in Team CSC , and in North America a fair portion of that interest is directed at Cervelo. This means that most of my days during the Tour are spent on preparing information for the media, radio or TV interviews and making sure our (online) advertising stays up-to-date. This leaves woefully little time to prepare for my other major goal for the Tour, which is to gather all our international distributors in France to discuss 2006 products. The idea was to hold this meeting in Pau, as the team would be in that city for four days but unfortunately Pau does not have that many hotels and the Tour occupies all of them. However, nearby Pau is the city of Lourdes, and with 5 million visitors a year it has an enormous number of hotels, second only to Paris. When I told Phil we would hold the meeting in Lourdes, having been there in 2003 during the Tour he told me that it was the armpit of France. What I didn’t know was that he was being extremely generous. I can honestly say I have never seen a city so messed up, so unbelievably sad yet hilarious at the same time. No description will do it justice, but imagine it sort of being like Vegas, except that it is supposed to be a religious destination. And imagine every gambling chip is in fact a plastic statue of a saint. Its rows and rows of hotels are force-fed with rows and rows of buses unloading rows and rows of old, crippled, salvation seekers. And during their stay they are gauged every step of the way, from the dirty, expensive, closet-sized hotel rooms in their “four star hotel” to the jerry cans of “holy water” to the made in China sainthood contraptions that “snow” when you shake them. There seems to be absolutely no connection between what is going on today and the original reason this town became a sacred place. I have to admit to not having read the entire Bible, but I am fairly sure it does not say anywhere that “Ye shall prey on innocent, desperate, ill people for your own economic benefit”. Whether believers or not, any sane person will have to come to the conclusion that regardless of its past, it seems God has now deserted Lourdes. This all however is not the worst. The worst is that in the entire town, there is not a decent meal to be found. Imagine being in France for a few days and not being able to get one passable meal. Imagine a pizza that is submerged in oil. I am not exaggerating, this pizza did not have a single square inch of crust or toppings punch through the bath of oil it was lying in. And when the waitress was unable to hold the plate level and half of the oil ran off the plate (to the delight of the recipient of the pizza and the dismay of the recipient of the boiling-hot oil), the only reaction was an uninterested “huh” and away the waitress went. No “sorry I burned you”, no “sorry I wrecked your shirt”, also no surprise anywhere at our table. It’s what we had come to expect in Lourdes. To really show you how bad it was, I have to make a confession. On our last day in Lourdes, we were so disgusted by the food that a normally unthinkable thought popped up. We came to the conclusion that the best meal we could get would be at the local McDonald’s, and so despite our health-consciousness and general eye for fitness we actually had dinner in France at McDonalds. Of course, this meal was also disappointing, as the advantage of worldwide uniform food is that it also provides a worldwide uniform let-down. In one area though the McD’s in France has a leg up on North America; it sells beer. It’s quite a strange sight, but it seems to be quite normal here. It piqued my curiosity and I wonder if you can also buy a beer at a McDonald’s drive-through. I planned to try that out the next morning on my way to the airport, but unfortunately I ran out of time. I envision myself pulling up to the window and ordering a beer, only to be told “Sorry, we do not serve beer in the drive-through”. And just as I think sanity is restored in this part of France I will hear “…… before noon”. The one redeeming feature to Lourdes is its location. It is a great starting point for rides covering most of the Pyrenean climbs made famous by the Tour, including the Tourmalet, the Aubisque, the Col d’Aspin and Hautacam. But my advice, try to find a hotel in one of the little towns outside of Lourdes for the real experience, you’ll be glad you did. My job in Lourdes was to show our 2006 model line to our distributors, and have them try out the Soloist Carbon so they can speak from experience when they talk to their dealers about it. But the first day was spent at Paris-Charles De Gaule airport as I had a six-hour lay-over before my flight to Pau. Normally such a lay-over would make me very cranky, but in this case I loved it. One of the airport restaurants had TVs and the Tour was on, so while the food was “imported from Lourdes” if you know what I mean, watching the stage to Ax-3 Domaines on French TV more than made up for it. Although I tend to get frustrated watching OLN , I had forgotten how big the difference is with real cycling coverage. French TV showed the stage without any interruptions for commercials, and every time they showed a group of riders they mentioned all riders who were in it and listed all the names on the screen. What a concept, it was actually possible to follow the whole race and everything that happened without having to keep an eye on the internet! Also little things like calling all groups out on the road by the main rider in it, rather than the useless Chase 1 and Chase 2 where even Phil and Paul cannot always figure out who is where was much appreciated. It is a mystery to me why OLN won’t negotiate to get this part of the feed for North America, it must be possible to opt in for the “graphics package” of the coverage. Before I get all sorts of angry e-mails, I know OLN can’t help it that it has to run ads whereas a public broadcaster like France2 doesn’t have to, but that doesn’t change the fact that watching it on French TV is a much better experience. So I would recommend to any cycling fans that they travel to France for the Tour, even if it is just on TV. So on that Saturday in Paris, I saw Lance and Ivan putting some time on their rivals, and made it just in time to my connecting flight. The first days in France I spent with the media, and on the Monday the editor of one magazine, his photographer, myself and two bikes squeeze into a rental car in search of a good spot for photos. The photographer knows of a great spot, but it is about an hour away so we get to have a pretty long discussion on materials, geometry, the pro peloton and other such topics. Having finally arrived at the special spot, it turns out to be raining on this side of the mountains and so without a single shot we turn around. We settle for the Col d’Aspin instead and while we’re shooting some photos a car stops right in front of us. Out jumps a fellow and he asks me if I am Gerard. We all think this is pretty funny as that obviously doesn’t happen every day. Take that, Phil! Turns out he is a proud P2K owner from Madison, WI, home of Trek. He has his wife take some pictures of the two of us with the Soloist, which again is a rather experience but he’s a very enthusiastic man and we have a nice chat. The CycleSport guys meanwhile think it is hilarious and keep on taking shots of this scene, so who knows it may appear in the next issue. Surely more than this P2K owner had bargained for. That evening, just like the evening before, I drive to Pau to meet with the team. This time I sit down with B.S. Christiansen, the team building expert of the team. Every time I visit the team I make a point of talking to him, as he brings a very interesting perspective to things. Oftentimes these talks have nothing to do with the team, we chat about our personal lives, Cervelo, off-shore production and why fighter pilots have to realize they are nothing without the guy flying the refueling plane. I then go to pick up the German distributor from the airport and at 2am, 30 minutes earlier than the night before, I hit the pillow. The next morning I once more make the drive from Lourdes to Pau and on to Mourenx for the start of Stage 16. Bjarne has been nice enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to chat with the distributors, while the strangest sight of the morning is Luke Robert’s Soloist Carbon, which sports a disc wheel in the rear. Asked to explain, it turns out that the mechanics asked him the night before what spec he would like for this stage over the Aubisque. As a joke he answered “a disc wheel with a 27t cog”. With these mechanics, you have to be careful what you wish for, and it shows nicely how relaxed the atmosphere in the team is. We briefly entertain the idea of having Luke start with the disc, just for the fun of it, and I offer to pay the fine. Usually an infraction like hanging on the team car or taking on bottles where it is not allowed carries a 20 second penalty and a 200 euro fine, and Luke doesn’t care about the 20 seconds to go with the 3 hours he is behind Lance. But it turns out that an equipment penalty such as illegal components or weight carries the penalty of immediate disqualification from the event, something which would put a fairly significant dent in the atmosphere so we decide against it. The riders leave for the start while we leave for Lourdes once again. While I have individual meetings with some, the others take a Soloist Carbon out for a spin. This is the fun part of the trip, as every journalist and every distributor comes back from their rides the same way: with a huge grin on their faces. It’s fun to see their reaction, of course the distributors know our products pretty well so they were expecting something as fast as the Soloist and as comfortable as an R2.5, but even they are still surprised when they actually experience it. Journalists are usually a skeptical bunch, and they should be if they are any good. But they too can’t believe this bike and can’t find anything wrong with it. I have to admit that while it is a great feeling to see riders win a Tour stage on a Cervelo or watch Basso come second in the overall, nothing beats the rush of having people get off your newest creation and just gush. After all, that is what we do, we design bikes. We cannot control how fast the riders are going to go once they’re on it. It’s also fun to hear what the industry is saying now about our bikes. When Bjarne Riis decided to use Cervelo bikes at the end of 2002, many thought he was crazy and some even predicted the demise of Cervelo. Now barely three years later people are congratulating us on having the smartest and best-looking bikes in the peloton. Only months ago some mechanics from other teams would joke that the SL in P3 SL stood for “Still Learning”, now even they seem to realize that they have made the biggest mistake when they “Stopped Learning” and let new technology pass them by. Just yesterday the unthinkable happened; a mechanic from another team (sponsored by a very, very reknowned Italian bike brand) asked Phil if he could buy a Soloist Carbon. That evening, as I walk back to the hotel with Peter, the German distributor, somebody stops me on the street and asks “Are you Phil White?” Take that, Gerard! I guess Phil and I are even now. Peter and I find this pretty funny and I hope a simple no will get me out of the situation. But he then asks if I am Gerard, and it turns out that this gentleman is also from Wisconsin and rides a P3. We have a nice talk and it turns out his wife is looking for a new bike, I suggest she gets the P3 Carbon to one-up him but he seems to think she should get his P3 so he can get the Carbon. I hope she wins or if nothing else, that they both get P3 Carbons : ). The next morning Phil and I have a meeting with the team, and we present our ideas for new equipment for the next 24 months for the team. Now that the Soloist Carbon and the P3 Carbon are done, the team is confident they will have the fastest equipment of the peloton for the years to come. Phil and I also realize that it will be difficult to come up with significant improvements, so it is important to take a long-term look at research and development. The first development that will come up will be the new Bayonne, which will be a pretty amazing frame. While it won’t help the team immediately due to the weight limit (with the Soloist Carbon already at the weight limit and fully aero, there is no need for a lighter but non-aero frame), we want to make sure we’re ready if the UCI decides to lower the weight limit. The rest of the day is pretty uneventful as I finish up my last distributor meetings, and that evening after the infamous visit to McDonald’s I muse that it is a shame I didn’t get to ride while down there. Next thing I know, Simon (the UK distributor) and I are putting together everything so I can ride up Hautacam the next morning. When surrounded by these giants of the Tour, it would be sacrilegious not to climb at least one of them. In 1996, Bjarne Riis won atop Hautacam (hence the photo : ) so it only makes sense to pick that climb. Plus, it’s the one closed to Lourdes. I have no pedals as I already returned my loaner set to the team, so I will have to use Simon’s shoes and pedals. I also borrow his tools and jersey, just in case the one Cervelo jersey I have is not warm enough. He tells me not to worry, that is was pretty warm this morning when he roe, but that wasn’t at 5am. Finally I have the Soloist Carbon and all my stuff ready, and at 10pm I go to sleep, the first time this tip I am in bed before 1am. But of course I can’t fall asleep, there is a punter torturing the piano downstairs, outside people are chanting and I can’t resist the urge to watch the recap of today’s stage on Eurosport. I finally fall asleep at 2am, the alarm goes at 4:55am and I don’t exactly feel fresh as a daisy. When I get to the lobby of the hotel I realize Simon and I have made one significant miscalculation. I look outside and it is still pitch and pitch dark. We figured that in mid-summer it would already be twilight at this time, but it turns out we were as wrong as Bob Roll trying to predict a stage winner. I decide to ride anyway, and so I start following the instructions Simon has given me to get to the base of Hautacam. The ride through town is easy enough, but outside there are no lights whatsoever, and there isn’t much light from the moon and the stars. Rolling along I remember having read there are bears in this part of the Pyrenees, not a very helpful thought right now. I imagine bumping into one on the road, and I don’t think I would ever see it coming. Then I get to an intersection Simon never mentioned, and I cannot read the signs as it is too dark. I wait a little while in the hopes of having a car approach so I can see the signs in their headlights, but there is obviously no reason for anybody around here to drive around this early. So I take a gamble and go straight, but soon hit another intersection. Here I can read the signs, but none mention Hautacam, I turn around and try another route, but unfortunately I never find Hautacam. Eventually I turn around, by now a little light has started to come up. Riding along a long straight road I have a strange sensation. I remember clearly that this road was slightly downhill and with a tailwind an hour ago, but it again feels slightly downhill with a tailwind now. This bike just wants to go. This is the first time I ride a Soloist Carbon since I rode the Giro prototype, which some of the Team CSC riders found a bit too stiff vertically. The new lay-up seems to solve that issue completely, as everybody raves about how comfortable the bike is now and I have to agree. It’s difficult to have a final opinion just based on a 90 minute ride, but so far I can only agree with the distributors and journalists. I think it is finally time for me to replace my trusted SuperProdigy with a Soloist Carbon. I get back to the hotel, pack my bags and Simon and I are off to the airport. In the last minute hectic we forget to go through the McDonald’s drive-through to find out whether or not they would serve us beer. But it’s always good to have yet another reason to return to France one day. Hopefully next day, and for more than four days. Gerard.

I was leaving for work
i had everything in a backpack
I was walking
i was on my belly crawling really fast
i was on the road
the road turned into a dirt road into a forest
the road got more beaten
I stopped at a house
there was a hollow stump with a few things in it
office supplies
I picked up a few things and put it in my backpack
i continued on
at one place a cow was comming up behind me
I stood still
the cow walked past me
there was snow around
More mud on my feet that I was walking through
came upon two women working on the road
After going past them I realized i didn’t have any shoes on
i needed shoes for work
I was barefoot
they said I couldn’t go back. it was too dangerouse
i told them i just came through there
They didn’t trust that i was the same person
I said I didn’t have time for this and walked past them
I thought I should have just showed them my feet and have them match them against foot prints
i figured they were just being funny or something.
I keep walking
the sceenery is beautiful
i took a couple of pictures with my camera phone
i stopped back at the hollow stump
I saw a cube of yellow post it notes laying neear by
a woman sees me
I put it in my bag and walk off
I think “now she knows where the hidden stash is”
I walk down the hill on the paths
I found a bridge and hid behind it
I see two wolves comming walking next to each other
I think they are going to come after me
they will smell me
a naked woman starts walking up from the side of the road near them
I think that they are going to smell her and go after her
it turns out that she is just another wolf and a different color
she was the leader of the pack
and then there are two wolfs that show up behind them
one is surely bound to smell me

Play the Podcast (downloadable mp3 file) The monsoon storm approached in the form of cumulus clouds, and the breeze was suddenly cool. I was glad Dad was meeting me while I was in Tucson for an end-of-the-summer, pre-semester vacation. I was looking forward to meeting him and spending time discussing career possibilities. The truth was, I was dreading going back to school, and his talk about guiding me, and helping me get started with my own business made me feel buoyantly optimistic. I imagined posh vacations and shopping in designer boutiques fancied by Japanese tourists. My enthusiasm was tempered somewhat by the realization that I’d have to break the news, somewhere along the way, that I had dented the rental car. Worse than that, I had crushed the rear end of the car I backed into in the parking lot outside Macy’s where I had been browsing through their Monsoon Madness sale items. It was discouraging to see the victim’s tire go flat right before my eyes. Thankfully, I had accidentally failed to decline Budget Rental Car’s pricy supplemental insurance coverage. I needed to let them know their car had inflicted damage to an innocent victim’s treasured 1978 Chevrolet Malibu. I would not have to pay anything out of pocket, though. There were two advantages to going to Tucson during August. First, it was a great time to take a break before the fall semester cranked up. Second, it was “monsoon” season, which meant hot mornings, early afternoons, and the possibility of violent thunderstorms in the late afternoon and early evening hours. I loved monsoon season. Perhaps that was because I grew up in “tornado alley” and I loved the electricity of impending storms, the drama of the wind, hail, and violent winds, and the aftermath with its intense rainbows, flooded streets, and the sweet smell of scrubbed air and wet dirt. The clouds were already amassing, but the day was still sultry as I prepared to meet Dad, who was arriving from Reno. I was alone. It might have seemed strange for a 21-year-old to want to vacation alone, but I wanted time to decompress, explore, read books, sleep late, drive aimlessly through the desert, foothills, and mountains. I was celebrating the successful end of a summer job as a summer geologist for Texas Oil and Gas. I was also forestalling the inevitable. I was going to have to face the guy I once considered a boyfriend, until I opened up one of the boxes he asked me to store over the summer. Actually, the box fell open as I was putting it in my parent’s garage. To my horror, it was stuffed full of hard-core skin magazines. “If Mother sees this, she’ll have a fit,” I told my best friend, Jan. Jan laughed unsympathetically. “You’ve got that right. Your mom will flip out.” She picked up one of the magazines. After opening it, she quickly slammed it shut and put it back in the box. “This is disgusting. I told you there was something really slimy and insincere about him,” she said. “Something is seriously wrong with him.” I sighed. Hutch had not really appealed to me at first, but Dad knew Hutch’s grandfather. “Very nice, very successful,” Dad said. “I really liked Hutch’s grandfather. He became quite wealthy, too. You should give Hutch a chance. He’s from a good family.” Dad was wrong, it seemed. Hutch was not the sort of guy you could rely on. If he said he would show up, perhaps he would, perhaps he wouldn’t. He was invariably an hour or two late for everything. Most of the time he seemed terribly impaired. Instead of being flush with cash, as one might expect the grandson of a prominent businessman to be, Hutch was always broke. To top it off, he expected me to store pornography in my parents’ garage. “Being 21, I have certain illusions and expectations of guys,” I explained to Jan. “I expect a relationship to be one of starlight, dreams, trust, and respect. I think there should be a kind of magic in it all, too.” “It’s the bare minimum,” said Jan. “The guy should also be financially solvent and show up within 15 minutes of when he says he’ll pick you up.” “But, in the overall scheme of things, a 21-year-old male of the species is probably the worst thing in the world to fall in love with. They’re out of control and crazy – busy learning from their mistakes. Piaget says the brain is mature by age 25. Perhaps by 30, they can keep from breaking someone’s heart.” Jan secured the cover of the box. She placed a box containing geology and math textbooks over it. It was hot in the garage and her fine, reddish-brown hair was curling around the edges, and her brown eyes glittered. “If you figure it out, let me know,” she said. Then I remembered that Jan had just gone through her own unrequited love ordeal. On some level she was probably relishing this opportunity for female bonding. If this is what it took to cement a female friendship, I hoped my close female friends would be few and far between, I thought dismally. Suddenly it seemed urgent to avoid Norman, Oklahoma the week before the start of classes. Hutch would no doubt come by my parents’ house for his things, and Jan would want to talk about how he most likely satisfied his evidently rapacious libido. Ick. I would go on a trip. Some of the best trips were brief weekend trips alone, where I flew somewhere and simply explored. Sometimes my reasons for traveling were academically inspired: one weekend was spent near Golden, Colorado, as I contemplated transferring to the Colorado School of Mines. Another was spent around Salt Lake City, as I investigated the university in Logan, the University of Utah (in Salt Lake City), and Brigham Young University (in Provo). Each school had a completely different atmosphere. Of all of them, the University of Utah appealed to me most. I applied to transfer there, was accepted, but then at the last moment, did not go. The palm trees were swaying in the wind as I walked into the Tucson airport. I suspected that it would be raining by the time Dad and I left. I failed to bring an umbrella, I thought, wryly. Oh well, an umbrella might attract lightning. Each year in Tucson, a handful of individuals were struck by lighting as they raced across golf courses, the wet decks of swimming pools, and parking lots to seek shelter from the pounding monsoon rains. Although I enjoyed traveling alone, I was no loner. In fact, I did not relish the idea of leaving home. It was a pleasure to live with my parents, although I did feel the pressure to do the “normal” coming of age things, and to get an apartment my senior year, and to take jobs in other towns for the summers. “How was your flight?” I greeted Dad casually, trying to think about how I would break the news about the rental car. I decided I would pretend to have carefully analyzed the contract and, after conducting a mental risk assessment, I chose to pay the extra daily premium for additional insurance. That, rather than the reality – that I had failed to decline the insurance – would make a nice story. I would look prudent and in control, just as a future young female business tycoon should look. Back home in Norman, I enjoyed going on long walks with Dad, as he discussed his business strategies and decision-making process. Practicing the piano and listening to my mother compliment my playing were also very reassuring. The trips I took alone, or with my sister or with Dad were magical. Everything seemed fantastic and new. Although I disliked shopping at home, I loved exploring the various malls and boutiques in Tucson. The “Haunted Bookshop” on Ina Road in North Tucson attracted me with its extensive collection of geology books, Victorian novels, and books on spirituality. Behind the bookstore was a little nature walk where one could browse around, enjoy the cactus in bloom, drip irrigated in gravel and sand. Occasionally, I’d see a Gambel’s Quail and a little desert pack rat. “The approach was pretty rough. Monsoon season,” said Dad. He looked a bit green. “Well, you’re on the ground now! Hungry yet?” I asked. Dad smiled in affirmation. “You bet.” I headed down the escalator to the baggage claim and rental car area. Dad interjected. “I just have a carry-on,” he said. “No baggage.” “You’re right. Well, I need to stop by the rental car agency – I need to give them the accident report,” I blurted out, all my rehearsed prefatory statements having vanished like mirages of water on a desert highway. “The what?” Dad stopped in his tracks. “Are you okay? Was anyone hurt? What happened?” I could see images of accordioned cars flicker through his eyes. Well. I certainly blew this, I thought. “It was just a fender-bender in the Macy’s parking lot. But, I need to let the rental agency know.” I paused for breath. “I took out the maximum amount of insurance, so there’s not even a deductible to pay.” “Good thinking,” said Dad. He still looked preoccupied. “One of these days, they’ll probably increase the minimum age to rent a car. You’re lucky it’s 21.” Traveling alone would not be quite as fun without the ability to drive and explore, I thought. The vacation so far had been enchanted. One night, I felt bold and made reservations for one at a 5-star restaurant, The Tack Room. By the time I arrived, I was quite ravenous, my body euphoric and hungry after a day of horseback riding, swimming, and reading. After dinner, I walked outside and looked at the skies thick with stars, felt the warm summer breezes on my arms, torso, neck and face, and contemplated the saguaro cacti, standing like bizarre semaphore signalling men with outstretched arms. One afternoon, after driving back from Kitt Peak and the astronomical observatory, a monsoon resulted in flash floods. I waited at the edge of a torrent of water rushing through a low “wash,” and ephemeral stream bed that generally only contained water after sudden rainstorms. It took at least 30 minutes for the water level to drop enough for it to become passable. In the meantime, I watched the cars and pickup trucks ahead of me attempting to cross. Many were long-time residents or natives, and they had experience in gauging the power of the flash flood or monsoon streams. Snowbirds were long gone in August, and not expected back until December. “You sort of like it out here, don’t you?” said Dad, contemplatively. I nodded silently as we walked out to the car. He had been surprisingly supportive and uncritical of my lack of driving skill. “Perhaps you could set up your office here, one of these days, after you get your business firmly established.” I felt the rain come in a rush, horizontal slashes of raindrops and bright razors of light rippedinto the space between sand and sky. It was a great idea, but I wouldn’t want to do it alone. Thunder rolled, and raindrops pounded the car. I thought of walks with Dad, piano practice with Mother, long, unraveled skeins of conversation with Jan about men, meaning, and material possessions. Travel was one thing, day-to-day living was another.

Well, Fox News is just so interesting. One man’s flag-waver is another man’s blind ignorant who doesn’t own a passport.
I found the transcript of Jim Carafano’s interview on The O’Reilly Factor which is linked below along with another of his.
London is still getting back to normal and I was heartened again yesterday when I travelled on the Tube to see that people were back to their usual miserable visages.
The Police have so far done an amazing job with their investigation. I didn’t imagine we would be this far down the line in a year, let alone a week.
